When it comes to achieving and maintaining optimal oral health, Molar Bear Pediatric Dentistry believes that proper oral hygiene and dental care are an essential factor. We’ve all heard how important at home dental care can be for healthy smiles, but is your child practicing proper oral hygiene?
At Molar Bear Pediatric Dentistry, we believe “brushing” should begin even before your child’s first tooth. We recommend using a soft cloth to wipe and massage the gums, removing any bacteria in the mouth. Starting early can also help your child get in the routine.
Once your child’s first tooth has erupted, we recommend investing in a soft-bristle infant toothbrush and some non-fluoride toothpaste. You can gently brush any teeth that have erupted along with the gums. Once your child can spit, we recommend getting toothpaste with fluoride to help protect their teeth from decay and damage. Here are some tips for geting your child excited about proper oral hygiene:
Just like with adults, it is highly important that your child be on a proper dental care routine. We recommend that your child have their teeth brushed at least twice a day. 30 seconds should be spent on each quadrant of the mouth (top left, bottom left, top right, bottom right), certain toothbrushes even play a 2 minute song to help! Once your child has two or more adjacent teeth, you should also begin flossing. Always floss gently and be sure not to tug on the floss or their teeth. Be sure you also get their tongue! Bacteria loves to hangout there too and can contribute to bad breath, tooth decay and even periodontal diseases.

We recommend that every child see the dentist at least by age one but preferably when the first tooth erupts to help prevent any dental problems.
Yes there in fact is! A pediatric dentist is like a “pediatrician” of dentistry, they must complete an additional 2-3 years of specialized training and are limited to only treating children. They specialize in children from infancy to young adulthood.
Depending upon whether your child has their first tooth or not, a washcloth or rag can be used to gently wipe and clean their gums. Once their first tooth has erupted we recommend a small head, soft-bristle brush. You should brush at night before bed.
Generally speaking no, unless the child continues the habit for an extended period of time. Most children kick these habits on their own, however we do offer habit appliance therapy for those that need a little help.
In most cases we recommend your child visit us every 6 months, which will allow us to properly clean any areas they may miss during their at home dental routine. If your child requires more frequent visits, we will let you know.
We recommend and offer custom-made sports mouthguards which are designed to fit properly and comfortably. These dental appliances can help protect your child’s teeth, tongue, gums, lips and even jaw from sports related injuries.
Along with routine professional dental care, it is important to practice proper at home dental care. Be sure to supervise your child while they brush and floss. A balanced diet with lots of fruits and vegetables can also help!
